How would you describe ABA therapy?

I like that with each kid, you’re always going to grow with them as well. You’re going to work with kids that are super responsive and vocal, and they talk a lot. Or, you’re going to have a kid that doesn’t really talk to you, likes to have their space, and you can work on ways for them to interact with you. This carries over to them showing interest with peers. Overall, ABA is continuously growing, and we’re learning to recognize what’s more meaningful to a kid instead of what the world expects of them.

What does an entry-level RBT do on a daily basis?

They would get to know what the expectations are of running a session and getting to know a kiddo. They would work on pairing and getting to know all their interests or likes and dislikes. They would get used to figuring out a kid’s cues and triggers and work on how to de-escalate situations.

What does training look like for an RBT at Action Behavior?

It's a two-week cohort that gives you a big rundown of ABC’s expectations. You watch videos on different techniques to use throughout your sessions. You are taught about running programs during DTT and in the NET setting. You’re also taught the do’s and don’ts. With the training, they put the new people with the practicum students. This gives practicum students an opportunity to improve their teaching skills and see what they could work towards in the long run.

What’s your favorite part of being an RBT?

It’s really cool to see that the kids are starting to scan the area for peers and think, “Hey, you’re like me, let’s play together.” They’re starting to recognize adults and their parents. They realize that what we teach here, they can also do at home. It’s great to see parents notice the changes, saying, “Oh yeah, I noticed what you were talking about, and they started doing that at home now.” Now they love hugs and tickles from everyone and recognize Grandma and Grandpa. That’s my favorite part.
