Autism Spectrum Disorder vs. Asperger’s Syndrome
Autism and Asperger's syndrome, along with other diagnoses, were previously considered separate conditions, but in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), published in 2013, they were combined into a single diagnosis called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The change was made because research suggested that Autism and Asperger's share many similarities and exist on a continuum rather than being two distinct disorders. The primary difference between the two used to be related to language development. In the past, individuals with Asperger's syndrome had no significant delays in language development, while those with Autism often experienced language delays or impairments. However, under the new DSM-5 criteria, these distinctions have been removed, and language abilities are now considered a part of the overall spectrum with different levels of autism severity.
However, it is not uncommon to still see individuals previously diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome continue to differentiate between the two labels. At Action Behavior Centers, we recognize the identity and community related to a diagnosis and strive to show acceptance to further support the community we serve. Just like individuals with autism, people with Asperger's syndrome have the potential to achieve fame and reach high levels of success in various fields.
